If it is out of square, then your best bet is either broken tiles, or a random brick patern.

How about a mosaic of broken tiles or broken dishes? They look fantastic and it can hide any imperfections in the straightness of corners and such.

If you decide to give it a try and you want some help you can join this Yahoo group for mosaics. We have every level and every type of experience amongst us from tile setters to mosaic artists. from beginners to professionals.

Try a piece of plexi-glass. You can cut it to any shape desired-it cleans up well, and can be decorated easily.

use glue backed, interlacing, flexible floor tiles... they cut with knife or scissors.
my dad did this on top of his kitchen table using mock parkey flooring and its been going strong for 20 years!

Just about anything you use will have to be cut. Ceramic tile is easy to put up. You can rent a tile saw at your local hardware store or equipment rental. Good luck whatever you decide.
