Flat roofs are generally not desinged to have furniture and things on them, unless they have been modified for that. Chair legs and such put too much pressure on a small area and may cause leaks or tears in the waterproof membrane. The best thin to do is build a small platform deck where the funiture will go. You can do this by framing a deck on top of decking boards (laid flat under each joist). This will spread the weight out and the flat baords won’t poke holes in the roof.

They also make foam rubber ’tiles’ that look like concrete pavers, but don’t have much weight. You just lay them down like pavers and put the furniture on top of it. Or you can just use pieces of wood under each leg to spread the weight out. Makes moving the chairs a pain, but it will save the roof.

    Hi,

If you check out my 360 and a recent Blog, I related a similar issue. If the roof is truly yours to use certainly you can probably do many things.

Furnishings, if you want to spend a bit more than the usual found at discount stores, go with aluminum, often powder coated in various colors, or oil based/poly based enamels.

Tents/canopies can be purchased in Nylon/Synthetic based fabrics, and will likely be more durable than canvas.

Lighting can be any number of outdoor types, even strings of Chili Peppers (Smiles). Certainly if they are plug in, you may want to consider unplugging when not in use. If they are more the permanent type and hard wired, your major concern will likely be no greater than issues home owners deal with in porch or lawn lighting.

“DECORATING” is a pretty personal, individual thing, like religion or politics, and though you might not strictly get any”wrong” answers; my opinion is that what works for ONE, may not for another.
