I am remodeling my living room. It is an old home and I have always wanted to tear down the awful ceiling tile
Filed Under Do It Yourself (DIY)
After a lot of elbow grease and a big mess, I have exposed the beautiful, natural ceiling beams. I am excited to put a whitewash on them and the tongue-in-groove ceiling. One problem only, is that we have old wiring (more than likely out of code). My husband is overseas, when he returns we will have the house rewired. For now, what can I do to hide or “camofluage” the sightly electrical wires running through a couple of the beams. They are thick and covered in a black material. Can I paint over them with latex paint, or anyone have any other ideas? I have looked through a lot of magazines trying to come up with something that is at least a little bit appealing, I havn’t found any yet.

dont mess with the wire the cloth will come off easily but painting over it will be good protection
I have 2 homes that have the same wiring and if I were you I would let it alone. I would make a “U” shaped box out of foam core boards ($2 for 36″ sq. at craft stores). It would be light enough to stick up with velcro. Also, if you are exposing the ceiling and it is regular wood, then use 1/4″ plywood and cut it so the bottom showing down covers the edges of the 2 side pieces. That would look better. Sand the edges. Go for it!
I would not white wash or paint any wiring for now. I would wait till my husband got home. You may have a lot more work in that ceiling than you think. I would wait. In the meantime I would get some fantastic fabric tie the whole thing in the center and spread it out to cover ceiling. It would look like the inside of a circus tent. This would be a super alternative is you have high ceilings. Maybe match wall color!
