is it possible to do this using a dvd collection or book and if so how does it compare to a training facility and will it speed up the time it takes to master it?
and finally does anyone have any recommended books or dvds on mauy tai or kung fu

not really because you won’t have anyone to correct you. So you won’t be sure if you are doing this right or not. Go to a school, and you can always speed up the process by watching DVD’s, but first you need to find a good school.

And stick to muay thai, kung fu is too traditional and won’t work as well for self defense. And I highly recommend you find a good brazilian jiu-jitsu school as well. Many schools teach both arts these days.

How are you suppose to develop power and condition yourself without any bags, pads or equipment or partner?

Yes and no. Martial arts videos and books are great supplements to your training. They can offer additional advice, techniques, workouts, philosophies, and historic information behind the style that your instructor may not cover. However, as a sole method of learning a book or a video is not as good as an instructor. The reason being is that even with the most detailed instructions you are lacking real time feedback. You may THINK you are doing a technique right but you may not, and of course the video cannot actively tell you want needs to be corrected or improved on.

By learning technique improperly you can actually put yourself at a disadvantage and if you ever receive formal training you’ll have to “unlearn” the bad technique.

    not really.
mauy thai maybe if you have done some sort or martial art in the past but kung fu there is no way at all to learn it by yourself.
